These covers were made as concepts for a fine arts magazine that covered a wide variety of art-related topics.
As a magazine that would showcase various types of art and artists, it was important to design a layout theme that would highlight the cover art without detracting from it. To achieve this a white and gold border mimicking a die-cut passepartout (cardboard mat) was used. This provides a design language that subtly leans the magazine toward the look and feel of a gallery or museum. This also provides the magazine with a touch of class and sophistication that respects the topic of art.
The overall typography for this design needed to be simple, so as not to clash with the artwork, yet unique enough from issue to issue to catch the reader's eye and engage them as much as the cover art itself. The magazine title itself remains consistent so as to be instantly recognizable over a wide variety of artistic cover images.
